Father’s Day March for Joint Custody and
the Hague – Tokyo 2010

For your average dad, Father’s Day means a handmade card from the kids, a new necktie or bottle of cologne, and hugs and kisses all around from those they love. But for a determined group of left-behind fathers and mothers last Sunday, Father’s Day instead meant a very vocal protest march through the streets of Shibuya Ward in Tokyo. Kevin Brown Speaks at a Study Session in Kyoto

Okayonet-Kansai sponsored a study session related to reforming Japanese Family Law. Kevin Brown (an Oyako-net member) spoke about his case, recent developments in the States, and what he feels needs to be done to change the Family Law in Japan. His speech was in English but it was translated sentence by sentence for the Japanese audience. Kevin’s ex lives in Kumamoto and has severely limited his visitation. Oyako-net Kansai was handing out flyers to raise awareness about joint custody in Japan. They are also petitioning the diet to reform Family Law in Japan. Now Japan is the only G-7 country that does not have joint custody as the norm and they are also the only G-7 country that has not signed the Hague Convention on International Child Abduction.
